Not quite sure how to feel about this...

UPDATE: I found the text to article but my camera was confiscated and I was put under punishment for days.

How would you like to be post man?

How would you like to be nailed inside of a small wooden box and put into route of a delivery service from Richmond to Philadelphia? Henry Brown, escaped slavery last week making this all possible with sufficient planning, making sure to escape from the treachery of slavery that he was confined in, possibly more confined he felt than into the compact box he squeezed himself into.

Hours upon hours of waiting patiently delivered, Henry “Box” Brown describes his experience, although tough, completely worth it from the beginning. His very faith in the Lord that He would protect him from any harm along the road and of possibly being discovered. This miraculous feat had been accomplished as Brown states “only with enough willingness, bravery and determination along with a very deep trust in God himself to guide me through this journey safely.”

Although Brown is now well-known to the media and other runaway slaves because of his courageous acts,  controversy is stirred once the question is posed: “What of helping the community and helping other fellow slaves escape their situations?”

Brown addresses this question by mentioning that not everyone can be helped in the same way.  That while it is unrealistic to believe that It is possible for all slaves to be literally delivered to freedom the way he was. However, he does mention that while his case may remain a unique one, other cases do not have to mimic in style but in creativity and bravery. “It takes tough skin and many connections to the north in order to make [emancipation] all possible.” How shall you attack one man for his own decisions and render his freedoms an obligation to share with the world? Justices come at expense for the coloreds, as everyone knows in this day and age, and it comes with hard work and nothing in return, at all or ever.

“It’s the stone cold truth.” States Mr. McKim, the helping hand behind the scenes of Brown’s scheme, “Nothing can every save you unless you truly want to be saved. Some may take it for granted and do nothing more for themselves other than the life they were condemned to live for all eternity. Life may give you some unripe lemons in order for you to make do with, but if you really wanted to go the extra mile, you pay for that extra sugar yourself.”

Whether or not it truly was Brown’s responsibility as well as his very duty to the colored folk of the south to help save the lot of them, it is up to the public themselves to decide. Brown will be among many of the famous slaves to be held in sweet memory of the efforts made to escape their twisted fate. He will still be held in the figurative hall of fame that many have yet to acknowledge, may his legacy be passed onto other aspiring free coloreds, to escape this very treacherous oppression laid at hand from the white hand.

Remember the fight Dred Scott had started in June of 1847 for his freedom? Well, the results of the case had been made on March of 1857; 10 years of fighting for his freedom and in the end results was quite disappointing. Due to of the fact that Dred Scott was black and was only a property, the Supreme Court stated that he had no right to sue. So Dred Scott had lost the ten year case against Sandford. For this reason, lets all pray once again for the fight he did for his freedom.

On a fateful day on January of 1856 a family of slaves had ultimately failed. They were caught in a house and while the men outside were trying to make their way inside, the mother of the family decided she didn't want her children to live through with slavery for their whole life. So the mother then grabbed a knife from the table near them and killed the youngest child. She was going to kill all of her kids then herself, but the men managed to get inside before she can kill the second child. For these reasons just mentioned, please show your support to the family and their attempt to The North Star.

Here is a page of a diary I found when I met someone who had my mother's diary. I'm sure she would like this to be told to people so that we all learn and do something about the society we live in.

Dear to my future and present,

Today was a day I wish that I could put behind me or a day I wish I could stop and go back into time to prevent the inalterable fate my lover has to deal with. It is another day in the many in my life; since I was born; that I wish I could tore off in the book of my life. Unfortunately life can’t be like that. So I have to live with the past and hope for a future for my kids, my lover, and I. Which I will try my hardest to make it possible. Now, back to the event I wish I could erase. That day had started out normally like any other days in the farm of- - Mr. Francis Newman; I would go clean my master’s house, help out in maintaining the field, and assist my master’s family on any needs they had. Though, while assisting Mr. Newman’s family I get called by my master to go assist him in a place away from the fields. Once I arrive there Mr. Newman had grabbed my waist and had pulled me into the room and had started to… sexually harass me. From there on I vision started to blur, the world around me seems to freeze as I start to see the situation I was in. I started to scream and yell for help, hoped for someone to come, but at the same time I had wished that no one would come because of the torture they will have to endure for doing so. With those thoughts going through my mind, I suddenly hear someone come through the door. I look at the door to see the one person who I didn’t want to see there- - my lover. He looked like he had just ran from the field since he was taking deep breaths in and out and the large amount of sweat on him. Then once he had fully embraced the situation he went up to Mr. Newman and had fought Mr. Newman off of me and had continued to punish him for what he hag done. I desperately tried telling him to stop, but he couldn’t stop. He wanted to show to the man who had assaulted me that he will never allow him to touch me again. After a while my lover stopped fighting Mr. Newman, I had and still have a very bad feeling in my heart that my lover will be punished for trying to protect me which fills my heart with guilt and sadness. Why must he be punish for doing that? Why must I be the reason for his to be suffering? Why must we be punished for protecting the people we love? Who allowed this kind of society to exist….Many thoughts run through my head, but out of all the thoughts I have, I know that I must also embrace the situation and hope for the best for my lover. For his safety and future because I know we’ll have very little time together. So until then, I will do my very best to provide all I can to him.

Hello,

I am a mixed race owned by President Thomas Jefferson and had six children fathered by him; four of them made it to adulthood and he gave them the greatest blessing ever to be granted to a child born into slavery: freedom. He gave each of my babies freedom.

To those who are reading this I wish to make a concrete claim that there are good people out there who see the struggles we are facing. I hope that tiny yet powerful statement I made gave you some strength to keep on living. Please keep up hope and faith in God.
